Carolina Beach is located on a slip of land called Pleasure Island about 30 minutes south of downtown Wilmington on Carolina Beach Road. The town has about 5,000 year-round residents and a family atmosphere with a vintage 1950s feel. The boardwalk with its arcades and shops selling ice cream, fudge and beach toys is a lively spot in summer as is the lake in the town center where pedal boat rentals are available. Nearby Carolina Beach State Park offers camping, fishing, hiking and picnicking, but watch out for the carnivorous Venus flytraps…the plants grow wild here!
The town also has a movie theatre, grocery stores, drugstores, beach shops and boutiques, numerous restaurants, both upscale and simple, hardware and variety stores, and even bait shops. The beachfront motels, including several vintage motor courts, offer a welcome blast from the past.
