Southeastern NC Economic Update

Wilmington, North Carolina, and the broader southeastern region are experiencing significant economic growth, marked by infrastructure developments, population increases, and strategic investments.

This economic upswing includes a notable 2.5% job growth rate, which surprisingly benefited the banking and information sectors, accounting for approximately 40% of the new jobs in the area, as you’ll see on the graphs below from Dr. Mouhcine Guettabi, Associate Professor of Economics and Regional Economist at UNC Wilmington.

The economic forecast for the area is bright, driven by sustained population growth, major infrastructure investments, and a strong housing market. As a regional hub for coastal living, Wilmington continues to attract new residents, businesses, and developers. The area’s economic momentum is further supported by projects like these.

Amazon’s New Fulfillment Center

In a significant development, Amazon is constructing a state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Pender County, just outside Wilmington. Slated to be the largest of its kind in North Carolina, the facility is expected to create over 1,000 jobs, ranging from warehouse staff to managerial positions. This $100 million investment underscores the region’s growing prominence in the logistics and distribution sector.

ILM Airport Expansion and Avelo Airlines Base

Wilmington International Airport (ILM) has recently completed a $69 million terminal expansion to accommodate increasing passenger traffic. The project added new gates, enhanced baggage handling systems, and modernized passenger amenities, positioning ILM as one of the fastest-growing airports in the U.S.

Further boosting the region’s connectivity, Avelo Airlines announced the establishment of its eighth base at ILM, set to open in April 2025. The airline will introduce new nonstop routes to cities including Nashville, Rochester, and Boston/Manchester, enhancing travel options for both residents and visitors. This expansion is anticipated to create approximately 50 new jobs in the area.

Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Replacement

The federal government has allocated $242 million to replace the aging Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Wilmington. This project aims to modernize a critical transportation link, enhancing safety and supporting economic activity in the region.

Brunswick County: A Population Powerhouse

Brunswick County continues to lead as one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States, driven by its coastal appeal and proximity to Wilmington. This surge reflects broader demographic shifts favoring southeastern North Carolina.

Southeastern North Carolina is poised for continued growth and resilience across multiple sectors. Wilmington’s strategic location, coupled with investments in infrastructure and a favorable business climate, positions it as a burgeoning economic hub in the Southeast.
